Surviving Crisis

If you have a lot of kids, the statistics eventually catch up with you. You are likely to have at least one kid with severe allergies, a serious medical condition, some form of special needs, or other issues. And you are not immune from job loss, housing problems, and the usual possible crises of normal life.

Some tips on enduring crisis, how children cope with changes, adjusting once the crisis is over, long term survival mode, and other bits of info that might help you get through when things are especially hard.

First of all, survival is highly underrated. Sometimes when we are in the middle of a crisis, we focus on what we are not doing, and feel badly about all that gets shoved aside.

Survival is a great accomplishment. You have to cut out things to be able to handle emergencies and life changing events. That is ok, in fact it is one of life's lessons to help us prioritize.

It is ok to cut out the non-essentials, and it is ok to not feel guilty about it. If your kids can't get to Scouts for a while, or if they cannot have new clothes for the schoolyear, it teaches them to adapt and be flexible also. No one wants to have to live like this for a long period, but having to do so, and getting through, teaches us to be strong, and it teaches our children to be strong also.

Children are amazingly resilient. They can adapt to change much more easily than parents can in some ways. Give them a stable and loving relationship with their parents, and they will adjust and survive the crises right alongside you.
